The Bergeson’s: Eric, Ben & Kyle
Eric called me Friday while I was finishing up my day of bay fishing with David Meehan. Him, his 13 year old son Ben and his 16 year old son Kyle joined me for a half day in the bay. I had informed him it was a bit slow on Friday but that it could change over night.
We deployed at 630am, went over safety gear on the boat, and headed straight to some spots of mine towards the mouth of the bay. After reviewing with them a little bit about the rods, the baits (artificial) and the technique, they tossed out their first baits into San Diego bay. In short order Eric hooked up, then Ben, then Kyle for a triple hookup with the first cast!
After releasing the first 3 fish, Eric started to really hammer them good while throwing some loving trash talk to his boys.
But soon Ben also started to hammer away and quickly elevated the game!
Now with Eric and Ben “ahead” in the fish count they were able to both throw some loving trash talk over to Kyle. I informed Kyle it was very early in the game and my money was on him. With that said, Eric and Ben pulled in another fish each!
This time Ben pulled in a Cabezon to mix up the species and make it more interesting!
After a slow time for Kyle, he slowly began his sneak attack to end the trash talk.
Here is a shot of a double hookup with Ben and Eric hooked up. Kyle almost had a fish to make it a triple hookup, but lost it after a short battle.
Here are the fish from the double hookup!
The things got even more interesting when Kyle reels in a short lobster!! I have caught Manta Shrimps and Crabs, but never a lobster! Not only did he catch it, but he actually hooked the lobster in the mouth! This lobster actually tried eating his plastic and eventually got hooked by Kyle.
The lobster brought on Kyle’s mojo and skill as he shifted into 5th gear to start the beating down of his dad and brother!
Ben and Eric still tried to keep the game going by imitating what technique Kyle was doing. Here is Ben with another Sand Bass.
And one of our friendly Brown Pelicans showed up to say hi and see if we had any treats for him.
Despite Eric and Ben trying to stay in the game, Kyle quickly caught up and tied off the score across the board!
With no mercy for the weak, Kyle kept pounding away on the Sand Bass and quickly took the lead in the game!
Kyle never looked back as he powered through the last few bass of the morning to end the loving trash talk and prove why you never underestimate the quite one at the back of the boat!
The final score I believe was both Eric and Ben had 7 fish and Kyle topped out at 10 or 11 fish. Overall it was a great trip and I hope they enjoyed themselves as much as I did. It was great to have the father/sons energy of joking around and talking some trash to each other. I really hope they can make it out during the summer months to get a taste of the offshore season!
The boys!
Until the next report, tight lines!
