Magdellena Bay, Baja Video 2008

Ben and I stayed at some “casitas” out on Isla Magdalena inside of Bahia Santa Maria. We booked the casitas through Bob Hoyt with Magdalena Bay Outfitters Magdalena Bay Outfitters(click here) which turned out to be a great option. Every morning we woke up to a great breakfast and a cup of coffee and then headed out to our boat on their Panga with fresh burritos packed for lunch. We fished until that latest hour of the day then came in to have appetizers and dinner waiting for us in the kitchen. All we focused on was fishing, not cooking or making lunch. This is really a great option. Staying at these casitas puts you exactly 20 miles from the Thetis Bank where San Diego Long Range boats often fish during their 10 day trips. The Marlin fishing usually starts within 10 miles of camp and goes out to around 20 miles with Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado everywhere in between! This trip was one of the most exploritive baja fishing trips I have ever done and was capped out with amazing fishing. If you are considering trailering your boat down or are looking for a captain to take you out fishing then contact Mag Bay Outfitters to get setup for a great trip! This shot is taken during sunrise on the hill just above the casitas looking first to the North and then wrapping around from the Mangroves out the mouth into Bahia Santa Maria and eventually out beyond the point.

First Striped Marlin hookup of the trip with myself on the rod.

This is a clip of the second day after it calmed down quite a bit. Ben hooked into a nice Yellowfin Tuna while casting a Raider Jig into some diving Frigit birds that we came across on the way out to the Thetis Bank. We didn’t get footage of the actual Yellowfin, just him battling.

Dead Seal with Dorado all around.

Ben hooking into a Striped Marlin.

Ben’s Sailfish just prior to release.

Some commercial Sardine boats came into the bay so we waited for them to finish netting their catch and were able to get some Mackerel from them. In the mean time we got to watch the whole process which was pretty amazing. I will say that there were Dophin and Seals in their nets which were all released safely.
