We arrived with quite a few other boats launching which surprised us a bit. Many of them looked like guys doing some pre-tourney fishing to see where the bass were. Once the boat was in the water we started to head out towards the mouth of the harbor when my fish finder lit up with marks just outside the launch ramp. So we threw our baits in to see if there were some Sand Bass. Sure enough we picked off a few fish in short order but decided to keep heading out. We wanted to fish certain areas right at high tide to see if they would produce since this weekend’s tide was very similar to the tournament day’s tide. We started on the outside and found quite a few fish but nothing with real size (over 2lbs). We worked in the channel and back towards the ramp and had a good morning of fishing but very little size to show for it. Once we got back towards “the bend” I caught a nice fish that ended up in the live well. Soon after Terry got another nice one to add to the live well. We kept working our way back as the tide started to really push out. It was a 7.5 foot tide dropping to a -2.1 foot tide which is almost a 10’ tide change! So the bay was really draining out fast which seemed to kick the bite up another notch. Once we made it in the back around the Nimitz area and started working some known holes we really started to nail the Sand Bass with lot’s of fish under 2lbs and a few over. At one point I hooked this nice fish which we had to back up to due to the strength of the fish and most of all the strength of the current.
A few of these tournament day would help place us high on the board.
Terry put another nice fish into the live well to help round out a nice bag. Then, around noon we found some good structure on the bottom and started to really put the hammer on some Sand Bass. Every time we pulled up and drifted through this spot we had a double hookup including some serious break offs and many fish that were right at the 2lb mark. This spot really brought the day to a nice end with about 10 fish caught and released in short order including this one of Terry’s.
Terry Hastings with one of many nice Sand Bass caught and released.
The weather was probably in the high 70’s if not 80 degrees out! The water started at a chilly 54.6 and went up to 58 in some areas as the tide swung out. Overall it was a great day...now if we could only put those fish together on tournament day!
Until next time, tight lines!
